Riverdale Park celebrated Veteran's Day at The Veteran's Monument in Town Center.
I am so pleased to see that God is alive and well in Riverdale Park! We said the pledge of allegiance to the flag and kept "under God" in it. We had the Star Spangled Banner Waving in the wind while the music played. We had Rev. Slye of the Christian Church ask God to Bless all our Veterans and also their family, friends, and all who attended. In these days when so many want to remove God from our lives, I am so pleased to say that here in Riverdale Park, "We still Believe!" Amen.

BIG change

In regard to the 2008 election when I hear the word Change. I want BIG change.
What does change remind me of.... A jingle in my pocket!!!

How about we change the electoral college and just elect the man/woman that the people pick? That's BIG change.

Clean up the welfare system. No one able to work will be on welfare. If they don't have skills, we will give them non skilled jobs (part time) and school (part time)
so they can get on their feet and make a contribution to society. We will not give them more welfare money to stay home then they can make by working an honest day's work. That's BIG change.

Stop the war. We use money for everything else, how about we use it to stop the war. I don't mean giving the money to all the terrorist countries. I mean stop giving the money. Close the wallet. No money for anyone until they stop fighting amongst themselves. That's BIG change.

Education: Let's make it a privilege. If you don't want to go to school and learn, fine. Don't. However we won't be paying you to stay home and do nothing. Want to learn a skill and/or train for a good job. Great. We will help you. We'll pay for college for the people who want to learn and we will pay for it by saving money on the jerks who don't appreciate an education. This will improve our education system. Teachers will spend time educating instead of disciplining.
Parents are required to be involved in the education system. Teachers are required to prove their ability to train our young people. Also let's pay teachers what our NFL players earn and let's play the NFL players teacher's salaries. We'll certainly attract more and better teachers. Where does the NFL get the money to pay those high dollars? We'll find out and do the same thing.
We can do this for the Police too. They need that same good salary as teachers.
That's BIG change

The abortion issue and capital punishment:

If you are for the abortion issue, you can't be against capital punishment. How much sense does that make. Kill the innocent new life, but keep the criminal life and coddle it? Next thing you know we'll be killing everyone over 70 because we just don't have room for those old folks.
I say, No killing. Period. None. Nada. NO.
That is BIG change.

Now, my favorite, the big financial/ credit issue....
Wow. Give almost a trillion dollars to the banks!!! What a novel idea. I can hardly imagine that kind of money.
The banks, the investors, wall street. Yes, those trustworthy wonderful people who would look after your money.
I say, Give the money to the people. Take the trillion dollars and divide it up among the people. You can trust them with their money. They will do the right thing.
First, they can pay off their mortgages thereby giving the banks cash back which will get them out of the hole.
The those that were foreclosed on can re buy their homes or other homes and the bank again gets the cash flow to get them out of the hole
Those who have no mortgage and don't want to own a house can buy cars, TVs, take vacations, etc. That puts money back into the economy and gets it out of the hole.
Those who have student loans can pay them off and that puts the cash back and moves the economy.
Those who want nothing can give to charity or save it. Either one helps the economy.
These solutions help on all levels.
The people solve the problem in an honest way we can all trust.
Give the job of solving the economic crisis to the people and give them the tools to do it. It will be solved.
Big, Big Change. American people in charge of government! Wow! Big Change.

Last Presidential Debate

Just wanted to make some notes about the debate.

The Health Care Program:
Senator Obama says all will have health care. He will make the insurance companies cover pre existing conditions. He will fine corporations who don't give health care to their employees. He will fine people who don't have insurance on their children.
Those companies who don't cover health care will pay into a fund so that those without insurance can get it from this fund and it will be equal to what he has a a federal employee. Sounds great! Who will pay? If insurance companies have to cover pre existing conditions, that costs more and I guess the premiums will go up to cover that expense. I don't think this program will help me at all. I see it as something that would be good for people who the government covers already and a real disadvantage for the small business owner.
Senator McCain says that he will give everyone a $5000 credit for health care and you can pick your own coverage. This would make the insurance companies more competitive for your business and that would drive down prices. Maybe. I don't see it helping me either.
So my conclusion for the "new" health care plans are not going to work for me. OK.
Moving on...
Education:
Senator Obama says we need to spend more money on education. Better teachers. Better schools...etc. etc. I have heard this for the past 40 years. I don't see this program going anywhere. Money doesn't fix problems.
Senator McCain says a voucher program so parents can choose schools. This gives parents a choice and it would be competition for the schools and competition can make the schools better. I would have liked a voucher program when my children went to school I always resented paying taxes for public schools I just could not use.
The voucher program for my son's kids would be good. He can't use the public schools either. I was educated in the public school system. I got a poor education and that was a long time ago. I decided my kids were not going that route. So I had to pay for the general population and then pay again for the education for my children. Which by the way was excellent. Hard to pay for a big sacrifice, but worth it. So. I like the voucher program.

The War:
I think both candidates agree on bringing our troops home in the next two years and it looks like both candidates agree on invading Pakistan.
I would like to see our troops come home in victory and not have to invade anybody.
I would like a better solution to the war.

VP Choices:
I don't see the VP having much power to begin with and I don't know what the fuss is about Palin, not being experienced. She has as much experience as anybody and I think they should leave this alone. I think some people have a problem with the fact that she's a woman and they really don't understand women. Women can do anything. They don't need experience. Even God let them have on the job training as Mothers because HE knew they could handle it. I don't see HIM giving men that kind of confidence.

I guess those are the biggest issues. For some reason I don't think either candidate has the answers. They are preaching change, but change is BIG. They are taking baby steps. Ask the women. We are sitting here patiently watching with our hands reaching out (just like when our kids learned to walk) and we really want to grab those hands and get them on their feet!

I can't wait to read this 5 years from now after all the change and the real world takes over. See you then.

My thoughts on Sarah

I saw in the Washington Post that Sarah Palin was deemed unethical because she didn't rein in her husband for harressing officials over a trooper who was terrorizing his family. I wonder, do all the people of Alaska have more rights than those related to Palin? I think he had every right to do what he did and its no reflection on Sarah. By the way, Here in Prince Georges County, our County Executive ignored a rogue police officer and he ended up killing 2 delivery men. Law enforcement officers are mostly dedicated, hardworking individuals. However, a rogue needs to be reined in and dealt with. I say congrats to Sarah. She may have saved some lives. Of course, we won't be seeing this in the Post. I would like the Washington Post to report the news, the issues and keep their opinions to themselves. I would like to form my own opinions based on the facts. I find the post biased. Reading it about the upcoming election doesn't help me make a decision.
I would like some positive reporting about the issues and what each candidate will do about it, specifically and how they will do it. I don't like all the negative dirt the Post promotes. For instance, John McCain stumbled over the name of the Afghanistan president. I can't even spell or pronounce it. Sarah stumbled over the General McKiernan/and said McKellen, I think. And the post blabbed about that ad nauseum. However Obama stumbed over John McCain's name. (called him Tom/Jim/ or something) and nary a word. What's that about? Stumbling over a name is not news. You get up there on that stage in front of millions of people and keep from stumbling. These candidates are just humans trying to do the best they can. Let's leave them to it.

Palin/Biden Debate 10/2/08

I watched the entire debate between Senator Biden and Governor Palin. There is one thing, I hope, Americans heard loud and clear. Governor Palin said, "Stop pointing fingers and lets move forward". That was the most important phrase in the whole debate. Just like a mother would say to her bikering children. Maybe that's what we need here in the US, a mother to rule. The politicians who we call our leaders are behaving like 8th graders, pointing fingers, blaming the other etc. What a bunch of brats. The President is not a KING, he cannot make the mess all by himself. The congress, sentate, house all have a part in what is happening in our country. So let's stop the blaming and the finger pointing and move forward as Governor Palin suggests. What a breathe of fresh air. They say she doesn't have experience on foreigh policy, well I say those current leaders may have experience but its not getting things done so what good is it? Maybe we need a clean slate with new ideas. They say she doesn't have experience to fix the economy, well, those in charge aren't doing a good job either and I am including those in the senate, house along with the president. You are supposed to be a team working for the good of the country and all you can do is argue and try to best each other. What kind of team is that. So, Sarah does have experience with team work and that's what needs to be fixed right now, THE TEAM. Our Captain/President is crippled and our Senate/players are kicking him around thinking this is a good thing? That's not team work. You should be ashamed of yourselves. (I can hear Sarah saying this) She has good sense and that's what I want in my elected officials.
I read the newspaper reports. They don't take Governor Palin seriously. Maybe I'm reading the wrong newspaper. I read the Washington Post. Maybe I should change to a paper who reports the news instead of feeble opinions. Any suggestions out there?
All the candidates are talking about change. I don't see any change coming unless the American people decide enough is enough and stop sending these cranky babies to do a women's job. We need Sarah Palin more than ever right now. She is the change we have been looking for. She can lead our country out of this mess and she can do it all with a smile. She has the ability, the intelligence and the compassion to be one of the greatest leaders of our time. I urge all Amerians to take an open minded look at her and see her American Spirit.

My thoughts in view of the 2008 National Elections!

The condition of married women has been essentially that of slaves.

Before 1848 woman’s property rights were controlled by her father and transferred to her husband upon marriage. She could not own property on her own.
In New York until 1860 women did not have the right to sue, contract, keep their earnings or keep the financial property accruing from any real estate, whether rent, profits or sale price.
Women’s property rights varied from state to state.
In Florida until the 1970’s a woman who wanted to control her own property had to petition the state for legal recognition that she could do so - in essence petition the state that she was capable of managing her own affairs and owning and manipulating accounts and property in her own name.

The 19th amendment in 1920 gave women the right to vote. 1920 less than 100 years ago
The 14th amendment in 1868 gave black MEN the right to vote.

So here in the 2000’s we condemn slavery and think it just happened to black people.
I am a woman and therefore I come from a slavery background. We don’t get a lot of media attention, after all, we are just women. If we stand up as “free people” we are ostracized and criticized. (Note Hilary Clinton and now Sarah Palin).

I don’t know about you, but I want a woman in the top job of governing our country. The men have tried and failed. They say Bush screwed up the country. I say it was him and all the men who came before him.
We need a woman in the white house. She may not get the #1 job yet, but let’s give her the #2 spot and rise from there.
Running a household, raising a family and holding down a leadership role and stressful job is experience and the best you can get. I challenge any man to spend a year in a women’s shoes who thinks that isn’t experience.
As far as Sarah’s opinion on abortion etc. She is entitled to her own opinion. This is the USA, right?
It doesn’t mean she will change the law. It means she has an opinion and is not afraid to say what it is instead of beating around the bush trying to please all. Remember you can’t please all the people all the time. We still live in a democracy and we still have a voice. The majority rules. (although we have been getting away with that in recent times)

Sarah Palin, a strong woman with the best experience, who’s not afraid to speak out and challenge her colleagues is the woman I intend to vote for.

This is my vision for Riverdale Park. We already have the boat down at the Bladensburg Marina. Just have to get the development going along the banks. And we don't want railroad cars.
Riverwalk is a well thought out development where you hear no traffic because it is below street level. What a place! What an experience. I loved it. I am so jealous that we don't have a similar place here in Md/DC We already have the river and the boat -how hard could it be to expand and get the shops and tourists? I could see this happening as a start right behind the Kenilworth shopping center to start. We just need to turn the buildings around and clear the area to the river... We are almost there....Park and Planning is already there and I believe we even have some picnic tables already.
So, I'm a dreamer tell me something I don't know!!!

Ever Heard of Downs Park?

Down by the Chesapeake Bay! We were driving down Route 100 and there was a sign that said "Gibson Island" We wondered where is that? We had never been there, so we followed the signs. Unfortunately, Gibson Island is a gated community in the middle of the Bay and some river and you can't just drive in there. However, we did go to the park just around the corner and it was great! Some guy took our picture and we took his. We walked around and they have a dog beach, pavillons, picnic areas, a Mother's Garden where people can get married, a nature center, an aviary, etc. etc. and they sell home made ice cream. If you go...you won't be sorry. Just stay on Route 100 and you can't miss it.

One thing I love about the blog spot is that you can write anything you want, anytime you want and if someone makes a comment you don't like, you just hit delete and away they go! I also like that you can keep a record of your thoughts and watch how they stay the same or change as time goes on. This helps to keep you growing in the right direction. Recently someone thought I was sarcastic and cynical. I made an observation on a public list serve and someone didn't like what I said and decided he would just tell me where to go. This is the second time this has happened and I just happened to notice that both times the comments were from men who happened to be very condescending in their remarks. It sounded like they had to publicly put me down. (I think some people call it "dick swinging") Well, being the person that I am, I always give pause to anything said to or about me. I certainly want to grow and become the best person I can be. If I did anything wrong or mean spirited I want to correct that. I once spoke to a rabbi about making remarks and people attacking you because of your opinion and he told me they are not your problem. You did nothing wrong. I know that I am a strong woman and I know that some men cannot deal with women like me. Too bad. We are the ones who can get things done. I won't broadcast all the great women doers in the world, just pick up a newspaper and see how many are in there. Please don't think I am bashing men. I am only talking about the men who did not heed the good advice of their mothers. The men who think women should be seen and not heard. All men came directly from a woman so they should have tremendous respect for them.
Now for my philosophy talk: I have found over the years that the people who judge others are the ones who are guilty of what they are claiming others are. When someone says you are cynical and sarcastic, you can bet that they are articulating their own personality. When all one talks about is thieves and thievery and how everyone is stealing from them, you can be you are talking to a thief. When someone thinks everyone is a liar - yes, right, you are speaking to a liar. So beware what you accuse or call others, it gives away who you really are. I could go on and on with more examples, but I think you get my meaning.
In ending, I want to say if you have any bad thoughts about me and want to judge me harshly, then the only reason is because you don't know me. If you knew me you'd like me. And even if you never know me or like me, you can count on me to help you out if the need ever arises.

Life in Riverdale Park

Something is speaking to me to write my story of life in Riverdale Park. When I first moved here in July of 1970, the name was just Riverdale. On my third day living in Riverdale, my phone rang. It was my real estate agent who worked for PG Properties. I can't remember her name, but I remember she said her boy friend lived on one of the other streets. She asked how things were going and I said fine. Then she says, "did you see the black people who live around the corner? They don't come out much." I couldn't believe what I was hearing and I just didn't understand what she was saying. In the next few weeks I met the "black people" around the corner. I don't want to write their name, because I didn't ask permission, so I will call my friend Mrs. X. Mrs. X became my best friend in Riverdale and to this day she is still my best friend in Riverdale. I love her and her family. We had great times together with our children and did so many fun things. Now, back in 1970 the black population in Riverdale was almost non existant. In fact, my friend moved in just before I did. She had firebombs thrown through her windows. (this was prior to my move). Now, Riverdale Park is a diverse community. I would like to think that my friend Mrs. X and I started the trend and it grew from our friendship. (By the way some people in town called me the N word). I am happy with how the community has grown and I love the fact that we have a diverse population. I remember that the council person who represented my ward was Joe Gebbia. I really liked him. I called him once and asked if he could get some signs up saying "Slow, children at play". The sign was there in no time. The sign is still standing at the corner of Ravenswood and Taylor. Joe moved out of town suddenly and I never new what happened. I think it was some disagreement with politics. I think it was a loss to the community. Through the years I met many, many people. I had 4 retired women living on my street. They all had the history of Riverdale in their heads and were willing to share it. What a great relationship I had with them. I alway respected the stories the old people tell. I remember town day down at the big park with the parachutes! The music! All the people! All the fun! The bike trail was a great addition. We would ride down the trail and then go off on a path and end up at the U of M. research farm where they had very unusual goats, ponies etc. and we'd stop and look and then go on our way. We would always somehow arrive at the "landing strip" where people would fly their hobby airplanes. That dosen't happen anymore, but is was fun to watch.
When I think back over the years and I look at today in my town, I see some very good changes. Then I see some things that I wonder about. I don't know if I am right, but I have always been sensitive and pick up the undercurrents of things. I am now seeing a group of young people moving into "my" town. They come here for the "cheaper" housing prices. They don't want to spend the money for Arlington, Montgomery County, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, so they flock to the nice homes in Riverdale with their reasonable price tags. We say Welcome, good to have you. But do they really want to live in Riverdale? Or, do they want to change it to something more upscale, get rid of the blue collars, get rid of the locallly owned business and bring in Borders, Trader Joes, Starbucks. Make us change for the better to exactly what they want but couldn't afford in other places. I hope I am wrong. I say lets keep our diversity. Let's all live together. We have one of the best learning environments right here! The only way to learn of other cultures is to live with them and we have that opportunity. Its a wonderful thing. If changing Riverdale into some snobish enclave is progress, I don't want it. My children have grown up without prejudice. I am so proud of that. They don't need "diversity" training on their jobs. Yes, it is happening. Prince Georges County was the first county where black and white lived together in communities and now we are embracing the Spanish Community as well.
It didn't come easy and we have had our problems, but we are on the right track.

I have always wanted to watch the Ringling Bros. Circus Train roll through Riverdale Park! Today was the day. I was going out to show a house and there was a train stopped on the tracks. As I got closer, I saw it was the Circus Train! I grabbed my cell phone, called Simon and asked him to grab the camera and go take pictures. These are the Pictures. I am so pleased we got some good shots. Wish some of the animals were looking out the windows. Anyway hope you enjoy!

Last night Simon and I watched the new movie Lassie! Lassie looks alot like our dog MacGregor! When Lassie runs through the fields, I think it is Mac. Anyway, I remember when my kids were young and I used to read "Lassie Come Home" to them. I would always cry reading that book. Funny how I came to own my own "Lassie" and funny how it was my son Larry that brought him to me. MacGregor will be 2 years old on March 17th. Look for him in his Irish costume! If you havn't seen the movie it is worth the time it takes to watch it. This should win the Academy Awards. I found it to be a much better movie than the Departed which was a winner. Lassie has no violence, except for the horrible trainer who hit her with the belt, but then got fired. No nudity. Lots of heart wrenching kindness and the very best ending. That's what I like in a movie.
This picture of MacGregor was during the last ice/snow storm. He was lying on the snow in our front yard and it was frozen so solid, he didn't make a dent. He weighs about 80 pounds. What a dog!

The year of the dog has passed. My dog represented the year of the dog on this blog. This year, 2007 is the year of the pig. I was talking to a friend of mine and I said, I know lots of pigs and they are all men. She said or was it he said, "A pig is a fine animal"! Well when I think of a "pig" I think of a big ceo, a president, a developer......and so on. I would love to put the face of these creatures on the bodies of the pig and post them, but I am afraid I would get arrested. So the year of the pig will have no photo, unless I find one of the Charlott's Web pig, I forget its name.....
So, here's to all you pigs out there! The animal pig is fine! The human pig is not good. Which one are you?

Santa Came To Town!

The Riverdale Festival of Lights was fabulous! Santa arrived on the Firetruck! I told Santa I wanted my sidewalks fixed. He said he would see what he could do. Just a few days later, the Town Administrator, the head of public works and the construction guy were in front of my house checking it out and planning to fix my sidewalks! How's that for getting what you want from Santa! Well, of course, I have been very, very good!

This ceremony is dedicated to the men and women serving in the Army Reserves stationed in the Town of Riverdale Park. I am proud to be an American. Pets on Parade

Pets on Parade took place yesterday at Town Center. Our idea is even though Town Center has no shops or activity, we can make it a happening place anyway. This Halloween was an appropriate time to get the area moving. After all, some call it the Ghost Town up there! So in the spirit of the season events happened. Goatman's Hollow was a spooky event. Ghost's all over the place.....Fun, Scary and very successful!!! Took place at the old federal credit union building. Thanks to Pete for providing the space and the fire department and all others who took part in this event.
Pets on Parade was sponsored by the Riverdale Park Business Association and took place in the parking lot at town center. Grownups, Kids, and Pets participated in the parade to show off costumes which were highly creative. Prizes for everyone! The Canine Training Association gave a demo on dog obedience. Wave and Mike provided live music! Calvert House Inn had food and coffee! Town Photographer Lance Whitney took tons of pictues! Councilman Rob Oppenheim mc'd for us and was gracious enough to wear the Pumpkin Head Costume with cape! Judy Glaes diligently worked at organizing all the activities, passed out certificates and did so much work on this event! We stuffed all the kids and dogs with treats before sending them home at the end of the day!
This was such a fun event and very positive reviews have been coming in all day. We are hoping to do a CD with all the pictures and original music very soon. We will keep everyone posted. If you don't hear from us, call or email us.
These are the times I love living in a small town. So many times we get bogged down with all the problems and negativity, but this Halloween it had been absolutely delightful! Yeah!

Years ago, I had a pet rabbit named Mickey. As you can see we bonded and played together and I really loved him. One day I came out to the rabbit hutch to see my pet and it was turned over and he was gone. I was so upset. My parents told me the dogs got him and he was gone for good. I found out years later that my parents ate my rabbit. I also found out years later that my parents ate my pet ducks. So you kids think you have it bad. Hmm. I still can't figure out what kind of parents would eat their child's pets. So I found this picture and as a tribute to one of my favorite pets - Mickey the rabbit - I have posted on this site.

On Saturday Simon and I read about the National Garden in the Washington Post and decided to go have a look. It was wonderful! The estimated cost of the project just $11.5 million! Now don't get upset - this money wasn't your tax dollars. This money was raised by the National Fund for the U.S. Botanic Gardens a 501c not for profit corporation. It took 2 years to complete.
We saw the First Ladies Water Garden, The Rose Garden, Regional Garden, Butterfly Garden, Lawn Terrace, and Amphitheater. Upon arriving at the check in desk in the outdoor garden we were greeted with a map and encouraged to plant a necklace garden to wear on our tour. I did complete my little necklace garden and brought it home to put on my windowsill. We tried to guess the answers to the rose trivia in the Rose Garden and by the way the rose is the National Flower. After touring outside, we went into the building as well. There are too many gardens to list and I can't remember the names of all of them but 2 that I was impressed with were the Meditation Garden and the Endangered Species Garden. What I was really impressed with was the cost. Totally absolutely FREE! No commercialism at all. No buy this buy that. No gift shop. No place to spend money anyway, anyhow. They even had containers with bottled water for the guests and it was free. I encourage everyone to take this trip downtown to see these gardens.

Some years ago I went on the "Bluebird Walk" at the Beltsville Agricultural center. There was a man who built bluebird houses and put them up around the center to encourage the bluebirds to nest. Seems like the bluebirds were disappearing and could not be found inside the beltway anymore. I remember this old guy taking us from nest box to nest box and he would lift open the top and let us have a look inside at the developing bluebirds. On occasion he would pick one up and hold it in his hand for us to get a good look. I never forgot that bluebird walk and the bluebirds always had a special place in my heart. You can't imagine my pleasure yesterday when I saw a flock of bluebirds in Riverdale Park! There they were on the fence that encloses the DeMatha ball field. (right next to my dog park!) I am so delighted that the bluebirds are back inside the beltway! That was the plan 20+ years ago and I have seen it happen. Wow! For anyone unfamiliar with birds, I am not talking about the blue jays that are all over the place. The bluebirds do have some red on their breast/neck area. The blue is so blue. Just beautiful. Anyone who wants to have a look, I have seen them in the morning and the evening, so just go walking. Nature in our own back yard! I have to give Simon credit for seeing them first and telling me about it. Thanks Simon.

Linkie has lost her hair, but not her smile! She is in the Riverside Nursing Home, 220 S. River St., Plains, Pa. 18705 Room 19 Phone is 570-823-5161.
Best time to call is after 4 p.m. she is in therapy most of the day. She has been in the hospital since June. She needs therapy to help her move about. She is in good spirits. She is still dealing with chemo but we are hoping all will be well very soon. Please remember her in your prayers, and send a card or make a phone call if possible.

Back in the 60's these 3 were 1/2 of the Sexy Six! Here they are still sexy as ever! There are 5 of us left out of the 6. Judy passed away a few years ago. She stays with us in spirit. Barb lives in Texas and Joanne wasn't available. One day we will get a picture of all of us together again. I find it funny that out of the 6 members we have a 100% divorse rate. We thought Link would be the only one to stay married, but no such luck or should I say we have all been lucky. Joanne married for the second time and is still married so one of the 6 is married. I think we should have Sexy Six Trivia here. If you remember anything, please post it here. I can remember the "turkey trot" - I think that was Linkie's creativity. I can remember the arguments, disagreements, double/triple dates, fun, laughter, drinking beer, eating pizza. Hey does Link look good or what. Bunky bought her tons of hats, but we kinda like the bald hairdu. She said if I let her cut my hair, she will let me draw hair on her. We can't agree who will go first so we are at a stand still.

Mac and Katie were guests at Mattie's Birthday Party. Mac wore his pink neck scarf to match Mattie's dress. Katie doesn't like to dress up and we don't make her do it. She will be having her birthday on August 29 and will be 15 years old. We will be having a big party then. I think we get prime rib for that celebration!

Mattie is 4 years old today! She is dressed in bright pink ballerina dress with ribbon and roses at the waist on the back. He also has a lovely pink necklace! She received many toys and treats for this special birthday, including a new pink collar that says "Princess"! She certainly is my princess. Her birthday cake was made from a sirloin burger cooked on the grill, decorated with a variety of dog treats. She ate out of the "You are Special" dog dish and MacGregor and Katie had special Haiwian theme outside dog dishes for their share of the special cake. Since Mac is still a baby (only 16 months old) he did receive a toy or two for himself. (I used to do that for my kids so they wouldn't be jealous. My Larry still had a snit because he always wanted more.) Anyway, Mac loved his blue football that squeaks really loud. We all enjoyed the party.

Today was the dog school picnic. Owners and dogs came to the Adelphi Manor Park and had a wonderful day. The dogs got to play many supervised games.
RALLY - signs were posted and dog and owner went through the course and followed the directions. There were about 16 signs posted. This was fun.
DUMBELL THROWING ACCURACY - this game was for humans only.
DROP ON RECALL ACCURACY - Dog must drop close to a line after he is called.
PROGRESSIVE QUICK SIT - Dog quickest to sit wins. Mattie won the first round, but came in second in the run off.
MUSICAL CHAIRS - This was the funiest one!
DOUBLE STRAIGHT RECALL - Mac failed this one altogether!~

Our food was great! The company was excellent! This is the first time I attended a dog picnic and I think I like it better than any of the people picnics I have been to. Thanks to Ken and Nan Nagle for all their hard work putting this together and also keeping the CTA going throughout the years!

Again, I have been neglecting my blog spot. No news from me for some time. However, right now some things need to be discussed and I am there. First of all, I want to know how many people know that we humans get oxygen from trees and green space. Then I want to know if we just don't care if we get oxygen. And is there some new thing that we will be breathing in the future instead of oxygen? My reason for questioning this is that I understand that my town, Riverdale Park, wants to turn one of the green spaces at the corner of Route 1 AND East West Highway into a parking lot for future businesses to be developed at that corner. I think that corner needs a big green space due to the volume of traffic and auto fumes that permeate the air there. I don't think the people in the town will care about more parking if they have to drag around their portable oxygen machines to get to the stores. I think they will order on the internet and not need parking at all. I think that our elected officials will be honored, remembered, and worshiped as heros if they bring a better quality of life to the community instead of bigger tax revenues. Its not always about money.
As I drive down the highway and look over at the Beale Circle Park, I notice the high grass, weeds and trash and general neglect. I wonder if this is some political tactic to win the people over to agreeing to a parking lot. I wonder if I could propose to our public works dept. and code enforcement that they need to write our town a ticket to get that grass cut and the weeds removed. I know that our local government would not allow me to maintain my small yard in the same way they are maintaining "our large, community yard". I would like to see a little more action and a little less talking.
On a national level - the president has been caught saying a cuss word and giving a shoulder massage to a lady who wasn't his wife. OOOH... such a bad man. Who is writing these news stories? Is this part of the "dumbing of America"?

Recently I told you that ST. Patrick's Day is celebrated for 2 full weeks. I neglected to tell you why. After all it is the longest celebration of any holiday and you may be thinking why would that be? As you know, St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. We are thankful for that. However, St. Pat still is working to drive the snakes out of the world. It takes a long time and is a very hard job. You may know some of the snakes. I think they changed their name to something that starts with a "p". I don't want to say the word. Anyway ST. Pat is working from the other side and doing his best. So, in honor of St. Patrick we celebrate his holiday for 2 weeks. If you know someone born on St. Patrick's day, you are very lucky. This person or dog is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. May you arrive in heaven an hour before the Devil knows you are dead! Anyone who lives in my area, stop by and have a drink. I'll be celebrating the full two weeks!

Since my birthday is on St. Patrick's day, I am somewhat of an authority on celebrations for the great day! For all those who don't know, St. Patrick's day celebrations always start one week prior and end one week after. That is 2 solid weeks of celebrating! That said, Simon and I headed up to Fells Point yesterday to start off the holiday. First we thought we'd go to Inner Harbor, but then Simon said there were more bars in Fells Point, so that's where we went. Our first stop was the Cat's Eye Pub. That was our only stop as well. Baltimore has the friendliest people on the planet. Sitting down on a couple of stools at the bar, we didn't know a soul. At the end of the night, we knew everyone! The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick with their green jackets, green carnations and Irish flags were everywhere. They raise money for the Little Sisters of the Poor. We met Mike, who just had to be related to Wille Nelson - they look so much alike. We met the Elvis impersonator who sang a few verses for us. We met Craig and his brother Brian who did the Irish jig - a few times. We met Robin who was so nice. My favorite tho, was Robert who gave me an Irish blessing and said that being born on St. Patricks Day was special. I would have a happy, long, properous life - what more could I want? I must say that I have been lots of places but none is more special than Baltimore. The people there are great! I love those guys! By the way, March 17th is also MacGregor's birthday. He will be one year old! Watch for his picture soon.

Since today was the most beautiful day in a long time, we decided to take the "kids" down to Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. We packed up MacGregor, Mattie and Katie in the car with leashes, treats etc and off we went. We thought it would be quiet there since it is Friday and a work day, but others had the same idea we did. Several people were there with dogs in tow. We walked down the path to the dog beach. This was Mac's first time to the beach. At first he didn't know what to do, but caught on quickly. He wanted to be the "greeter" for all the new arrivals! A couple of reporters from the Community Newspaper came by and he promptly jumped all over them. He chased the labs and retrievers. He ran on the sand and splashed in the water. Mattie walked along the beach, but the water did not interest her. Katie stayed by my side like a good little girl. After the beach we walked up the path to the enclosed dog park and had a run. Katie growled at a couple of the puppies. She's like that. After all the exercise we left the park and went to the Muddy Paws Cafe Dog Wash. What a great experience. Simon and I had Cafe Mochas and all 3 dogs got groomed and bathed. We bought some toys. They played with others waiting for their turn. What a fun place and a wonderful day. We highly recommend the Park and the Muddy Paws Cafe. A fun day. Be sure to see the above pictures.

It's time for the Mardi Gras once again! I am a wee bit early but I may not have time tomorrow for the real day, so Happy Mardi Gras to everyone. In honor of the occasion, Mattie dressed up a little and posed for you. She wears her shiny beads and feather head dress. She is such a doll! Since this is, as you know, the year of the dog - Mattie will be featured on this site alot! This is a dog who loves to dress up and pose for the camera. She has picked out her Easter dress, so be sure to check back. She may even do a preview before Easter. She also has a bunny suit which is the cutest! Mac's birthday is coming up on St. Patrick's Day and we are trying to find him the proper outfit but it is difficult. He is so big! Why don't they make "big dog" outfits? Probably because big dogs won't wear them? Anyway, Happy Mardi Gras to everyone.

Dale Underwood Recital

I know I said I would give you a review of the recital. Here it is. I found out that I know very little about music. The sonatas played by Dale had several movements. I didn't know where one ended and one began. It was obvious to me that these were difficult pieces only a true professional could play. He was accompanied by piano. I thought it was a very pleasant evening. However, I would have liked a little rock and roll! I am sure Dale doesn't do that. He is a true talent and accomplished musician.

New adventures!

Feeling the doldrums of February surrounding me, I decided to find something to do to cheer myself up. I checked out aol city life, but the dating scene, punk rock, and eating didn't interest me. So, off to the Washington Post, Weekender section. I am a reader, right? Anyway I found a concert for Sunday evening. The Catholic University of American School of Music was presenting "Beautiful Music, The Best of Rooms" at the Shrine. Noting that the Shrine is a quick drive from my home and the parking is plentiful, I decided to go. I didn't know what to expect but that didn't stop me. The concert was held in the Crypt church, which is one of my favorite places for meditation. Printed in the stone walls across the ceiling are the words, "And the Word Was Made Flesh". I like that phrase. It could also mean "thoughts are things" and I believe what you think, you can create. I'm getting off track here. Back to the concert. There were about 120 young people with voices of the angels! On occasion accompanied by organ music and also by a single French horn and oboe. What a treat. Absolutely beautiful. There were times I got chills listening to these voices. Making this beautiful music out of nothing. I was impressed. And now the clincher - It was absolutely FREE! I would have paid for that performance.
Being such a positive experience, I decided to see what else I could check out. I didn't even bother with aol again, went right to the Washington Post. There, another concert/recital being held at the University of Md. That's right in my own back yard. Looking at the name of the performer, I am intrigued. Dale Underwood would be performing a saxophone recital. It's tonight at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. and again its FREE. When my son, Larry attended Dematha Highschool back in the 80's, I hired a teacher to supplement his saxophone lessons. His name was Dale Underwood and at that time he played with the Navy band. By the way, Larry ended up being first Sax, first chair in the Dematha Wind Ensemble, which is a big feat and honor. I see now that Dale is on staff at the University of Md. and I am anxiously awaiting his performance tonight.
This is my way of getting rid of the February blahs. Hanging out at the local tavern in Riverdale Park and talking about the boring politics was not doing it for me. If anyone wants an uplift, there are things out there to do and they don't cost you a penny! That is cheaper than a beer at the local watering hole! I think I'm onto something here. I will let you know about the recital tomorrow. If you know of any good adventures, please let me know.

A Valentine Story

Today I had an early real estate workday. Had an inspection scheduled for the early a.m. hours, so I wasn't operating on full caffeine. As I was standing in the dining room getting ready to wrap it up, the buyer and the inspector were doing their final paper work. The buyer says "What's today the 13th? The Inspector replied "Yes. I remember Valentines Day when I was married. Writing out endless paper valentines with the kids. Making heart shaped cookies and cupcakes. Gifts for Me? I didn't expect it nor did I receive any.
So, congratulations to the baby boomer Moms who brought up their sons to be caring, intimate and sensual. What a great job you did! I witnessed this first hand today. I know my own son is showering his wife with love this day as well as his children. It doesn't take a village, Hilary -It just takes a woman. Wow! Our first snow storm comes just right on time for V-Day! Since this is the year of the dog, and since there is no greater love than dog love - well - I did a little dress-up with Mattie and MacGregor and took them out in the snow! See their pictures above. If you never had a dog, you are missing out on one of the best things in life. MacGregor has his little kerchief of hearts and Mattie has her fancy collar of red and white. Looks great with the snow background! This is MacGregor's first snow fall and he is having the best time. Running, jumping playing in all this fun white stuff! Enjoy my best Sweethearts!

Just wanted to remind everyone out there that coming up Jan. 29th is the Year of the Dog! It warms my heart. I love dogs. I think this means that this year would be good for close companionship, loyalty, honesty and integrity. We could use more of that. When I think of what my dogs represent to me, I think of unconditional love, warmth, affection, company, security, playfulness, and the best life has to offer. I have heard people say, "She treats him like a dog". I think that must be pretty good. If I treated you like a dog, you would have a very happy life! I had an ex husband who claimed I liked the dog better than I liked him. He was right. Guess that's why I'm divorced. However, if he was more of a dog I would have liked him as well. My Mom was taken back when I told her I named my puppy after her. Katie. She said, "you named your dog after me" and I said Yes, I did and that should be an honor. I think more of the dog than I do of most people. Dogs only stay with you a short time here on earth. Every day is precious. They teach you so much about getting along and loving others. Now of course everyone knows - DOG spelled backwards is GOD! I don't think that was a mistake.

No Smoking!

I just wanted to comment on the No Smoking ban in my county. I am a smoker. Even tho I smoke less these days, I am still a smoker. If I stopped altogether, I would still consider myself a smoker. And....I would hang out with the smokers even if the little white stick never touched my lips. Did you ever notice when you went to a wedding or a function where you didn't know anyone and were feeling a little uncomfortable? Just walk outside the door, next to the outdoor ashtray, stand a minute and before you can blink your eye you are one of the gang. People are smiling, talking and here you are with a bunch of instant friends. I believe smokers and drinkers are social people and I can't live without them. That said, and please my non-smoking friends don't take offense, I have something to say that I just don't understand. Maybe I missed a brain cell or two on my trip to earth, but I noticed that there is a group of people who are very serious and passionate about not allowing others to smoke so much so they passed a law that you can't smoke in public. I don't see this group banning other public problems like alcohol which does cause deaths on the roadway sometimes, sex which does cause some big problems with health sometimes, and my biggie - the automobile. Hmm. It just makes me wonder. I got an email today about tumors in fish and here I quote, "In the Anacostia, Fish and Wildlife scientists linked liver tumors in bullheads to polluted urban runoff laden with car exhaust residue, pavement sealants and asphalt particles." Now I'm thinking maybe the tumors, health problems, heart problems, cancer is coming from the cars and not the cigarettes. Maybe we should ban the automobile. So, I say - no cigarettes, no alcohol, no sex, no cars. That will make us healthy and give a fuller richer life. We won't live any longer, we'll just think we did. Amen.
